Campbelltown Notes
| From Our Own Correspondent] The Young People's Christian Endeavour Society in connection with the Primitive Methodist Church has again been started for the winter months. During summer it was not carried on, but on Tuesday last a meeting of members was held for the purpose of electing officers, etc., for the present season. Rev. Cocker was elected president ; Miss B. Jarvis, vice-president ; Mr A. Mills, secretary ; Mr J. Merrett, treasurer. Tuesdays are the nights of meeting, and with the energetic members that belong to it, it is sure to prosper. The members of the Church of England intend to make a start towards getting the church erected shortly, and to have it finished by the beginning of October. Delay lias been caused by the members being desirous of obtaining sufficient funds to erect the church free of debt. One of our respected citizens passed peacefully away on Wednesday evening last, in the person of Mrs Smith, who, for the past two years, has been suffering from an internal complaint. She had^ained a large number "of friends during her residence here, and was much respected for her gentle disposition and the patience she exhibited during her long illuess. Much sympathy is expressed to her sorrowing family, who, fortunately, are all grown up. The members of the Excelsior Lodge held the usual weekly meeting on Thursday evening, when a goodly number were present. It being the beginning of the quarter, the installation of officers took place, and the following officers were installed by Bro. V. C. Ransom : — L.D., Bro. F. Pidgeon ; P.C.T., Sister Ransom ; C.T., Sister M. Hunt ; V.T., Bro. J. Merrett; secretary, Sister S. Broadbelt ; assistant - sec, Sister L. Riley ; chaplain, Bro. W. Mackay ; treasurer, Sister E. Mitchell; F.S., Sister E. Bull ; M., Bro. Duthie ; D.M., A. Burgess ; G., Bro. J. Welsh, senr. A report was then given by Bro. J. Merrett of his visit to the Grand Lodge at Dunedin, as representative for the Excelsior Lodge. He expressed himself as beiug very thankful to the lodge for the honor conferred on him. He gave au interesting account of the session, and stated that the Dunedin Lodge had initiated Mr Fish, the Mayor of Dunedin and formerly M.H.R., a member of the Order, who is now fighting in Dunedin as au earnest temperance worker, and who previously was a bitter antagonist of the Temperance party. Bro. V. Ransom proposed that Bro. Merrett's report be acceptod, and a vote of thanks was accorded to him for the manner in which he fulfilled the duties of their representative. I ani sorry to record the death of a Mr W. Wittington, of Portsmouth, who is a brother of Mrs G. Merrett and Mr J. Wittington, of Catnpbelltown. His death was caused by an accident in a chalk pit, of which he was foreman. The accident took place on the 10th of October last. A fall of chalk came down suddenly, and in bis attempting to escape he fell across the rails of a tramway leading into the quarry and fractured his right thigh so severely that it was necessary that it should be amputated. The .suffering man never recovered, and died on the 6th March. The deceased leaves a grown-up family to mourn his loss, who are all arnptly provided for.
