Captain Edwin wired at 1 p.m. to-day —Indications for very cold night. The death is announced in Wellington of Cr J. Petherick, one of Wellington's oldest settlers. A concert in aid of the Awahuri School funds, will be held on Thursday next. Settlers paying high interest rates may now reduce the annual bill. Mr T. Watson offers money at oh per cent. Jackson's ■' vertical writing " and new code copybooks have been authorised to be used'in public schools in the colony. We have received a complimentary ticket for the concert and dance to be held at Pohangina on the 10th instant. The country in the Kiwitea and Waituna districts looks well and there is every prospect of abundance of feed for the winter. We understand that Messrs Rimmer and Craven were the successful tenderers for the erection of Mr Viles' residence at Kiwitea. Mr J. W. F. Halcombe has accepted Mr J. Sutherland's challenge to wrestle and the match will take place in the Assembly Rooms on Saturday next. There was only one tender for a lease of the Manawatu Gorge ferry reserve, namely, frmo Mr Cotter at 7s an acre which was accepted for one year. We are glad to announce that Mr George Kidd, of Kiwitea, who has been seriously ill for some time, is now progressing favorably towards recovery. Mr McMillan, auctioneer, has been instructed to sell, at Foxton, certain privileges of the' Foxton Racing Club enumerated in the advertisement which appears to-day. Dairy farmers ought to clo well this winter. The Cheltenham factory has already received orders for as much butter as "can be made, and the price is on the rise. A few clays ago a son of Mr T. R. Taylor of Kiwitea bad a fall from his horse, and fractured a leg. The little sufferer was attended to by Dr Mussen and is now doing well, We understand that the Bishop of Wellington has promised a set of altar vessels for the St. Michael's and All Angels Church, Stanway road. He will send Home lor them. A London magistrate has decided that a piano or fiddle played by a neighbour after 11 o'clock at night may be deal with as a nuisance. Before that hour it cannot be so regarded. The following native land is gazetted as taken for the construction of drainage works in the Aorangi Drainage district; — Subdivision 8 E, Lower Aorangi, Block XVI, Te Kawau, 8 acres 2 roods, 30 perches. The Anniversary services in connection with the Bunnythorno Wesley an Sunday School were held last Sunday. The service in the morning was conducted by the Rev Mr Cocker, of Feilding, and in the evening by the Rev Mr Clark, of Otaki. Mr F. McGuire, M.H.R. of New Zealand, who is on a visit to England states that lie has induced the New Plymouth bondholders to agree to arbitrate with the New Zealand Government for the restitution of the two hundred thousand acres included in the erant. We are compelled, owing to pressure on our space, to hold over till to-mor-row's issue a letter from His Worship the Mayor dealing with the letters from Mr McLean and Mr Giesen on Borough matters. Also a letter from Mr Homer, in reply to " Stuck in the mud," in connection with the Pemberton roads. At the Auckland Trotting Club meeting last Saturday, the last race, the Autumn Handicap, was run in the dark and resulted : — Riel 1, Kit 2. Sixteen horses started. On entering the straight the three leading horses fell, two being killed and the third injured. The riders escaped with a severe shaking. The night had so far advanced that persons from the Grandstand did not notice the accident. At the Rangitikei County Council meeting on Saturday, it was resolved, on the recommendation of the Engineer to suggest to the Kiwitea County Council the advisability of substituting a suspension bridge at Otaro, for a cylinder bridge. Mr Mackay states that the structure can be built for £3,000 if his suggestion is adopted, instead of over i' 5.000 for the cylinder structure. He also says that the site is eminently suitable for a suspension bridge.
