Manchester Road Board.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above body was held oa Saturday afternoon last. Present — Messrs tf. Y. Lethbridjre, J. Purkiss, W. G. Pearce, A. Conway, H. J. Booth, G. C. Wheeler. Mr P. Y. Lethbridge was re-elected chairman, this beinyr the first meeting 1 oi the .Board after the general election. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was read and dealt with a3 toiiows : — From A. Grant, complaining that the valuation of his property was too high and asking them to take it into consideration. From Secretary to Treasury, stating £210. loan for Cheltenham Gross road bridge, had been placed to the Council's credit. Also, stating £686, final advance of loan for construction T of work in No. 3 ward had been placed to the Board's credit. . - ■ From Secretary Palmerston JB6&- • •; pital, asking for valuation list of the * district. From J. Ingley, applying for slaughtering license. — Granted, subject to approval of inspector; From Secretary to Treasury^' re applications for additional 10 per cent on loans. From Secretary to Kiwitea County Council, applying for this Board's share of cose of erection of Cheltenham Cross road bridge. ; From A. Managh, asking the Roard to postpone metalling work on the Cemetery road till gpring owing to wet weather. From Jas. Wilson, asking that the name of G. Merrett be substituted on rate roll for sections 9, 10, 1 1, 26, 27, 28, 29, and 30, subdivision A.— Alteration made. From E. Sanders^ asking the Board, to prevent reserve in As hurst being used as a paddrcV, or else vest.it in trustees to look after it for the benefit of the public. From Guy and Hagjritt, Palmenton North, asking for account ot rates on property recently owned by Mrs Stead. — Clerk to reply. From J. Woods, Ashurst, asking permission to cut a drain in front of sections 287, 288, and 289.—Engineer to inspect From C. Jansen, asking the Board to reduce the valuation of his property as the floods in the Mangaone had washed about twelve acres of his land and covered several acres with sand. From H. Pryce- Jonee, Rangitawa, complaining of. Maori sheep wandering about the roads adjacent to his property, thus causing inconvenience ;■ when sheep are being driven along the road, and asking the Board if J they would uphold his action in the event of his impounding them. Mr C. H. Coote waited on the Board, presenting a petition signed by fourteen ratepayers in the Manchester Road Boasd. district and Kiwitea County asking that a cart bridge be erected across the Makino stream on Mackay's line. He said, that he and i others interested were willing to-aub-scribe towards the cost. The chairman informed him that if they raised private subscriptions it would strengthen their application and the Board would consider and see what they could do to assist them, at the same time he pointed out the impecuniosity of the Board..- .■■,. ■:—; Mr Lethbridge reported .that he (abcompanied by Messrs PiraniM.H.R. and J. Cotter) had waited oh the Minister of Lands in support oi an application for Government assistance towards the re-erection of- :the\Gorge r bridge. The Minister recognised the necessity of the bridge and stated he would place the matter ' before the Cabinet. V ,;.'./ Proposed by Mr Booth, seconded by Mr Lethbridge, That Alex. Managh be granted extension of time ,on his metalling contract, Cemetery road, until next spring.— Carried. ... . ; . Proposed; by Ma: Conway,' seconded by, Mr Purkiss, That the Mancliester Road Board are willing to appoint a custodian for reserve near where the old trig stood if the ratepayers of Ashurst will send in t the name of a suitable man.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Purkiss, seconded by Mr Booth, That Messrs A. Grant and C. Jensen be informed that this Board; cannot accede to their applicatidn for' a reduction of their valuations.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That the Clerk draw the attention of the" proprietors i of the Bunnythorpe Hotel to the unsatisfactory state of the drain leading from their, premises along the railway hne towards the Mangaone stream and request that, it be cleaned out and kept in order.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded byMr Booth, That Mr Cotter's offer of 7s per acre be accepted for a lease of the Ferry reserve for a period of twelve months. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That this: Board wishes to place on record its appreciation of the services rendered by Messrs Frazer, Andrews, Brown, jPndney, and IVest, in keeping the Mangaone bridge clear of timber during the late 1 floods, thereby saving the bridge from destruction. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Booth, seconded by Mr Lethbridge, That a general rate of M in the JL on the rateable value of the rateable property within the Manchester Road District be 'hereby struck according to the advertised notice for the year ending March 31st, i 896, such rate to become payable in one sum on the 6th day of May, 1895, at the office of the Board, Feilding.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That the Clerk write to Mr Pryce- Jones pointing out that flection 104 of the Public Works Abt, 1882, im^ powers anij person I to ■ impound! stock straying on fenced roads, and therefore the remedy for the nuisance complained of lies in his own hands,— Carried, Resolved, That Mrs W. H. Harris 1 charitable aid be reduced from 15s to 10s pep week. _ Proposed by Mr Gonway,* seconded by Mr. Booth, That the Manchester Road Bpard thank Mr Cotter for his kindness in allowing his: vbgatf to, be used at the Gorge ferry. ; and that the Engineer he insteucted to get a punt at once.
