Mr G. V. Shannon was a visitor to Feikling to-day. A entertainment is to be given in the Temperance Hall, Cainpbelltown, on Friday, 10th iust. The Marton Operatic Society intend giving a performance in Feikling at an early date. Mr Henry Richardson has been appointed postmaster at Bunny thorpc vice Thoman Neale, resigned. Mr J. Sutherland expresses a desire to meet Mr J. W. F. Halcomble in another wrestling match. Captain Edwin wired afc 12.03 to-day : — N.E. to N. and W. gales with rain ; glass fall. To-morrow night there will be a social gathering in the Primitive Methodist Church v/beri a miscellaneous programme will be gone through. A woman in Manchester has eyes which magnify objects fifty times their natural size. ' The oculists consider her a wonder. The number of bankruptcies tiled in Wellington since the beginning of the year is 22 as against SI for the same period of last year. The following are the vital statistics for tho district of Paluicrstou North for month ending 30th April ;— Births, 23 ; deaths, 10; marriages, 8. It is probable that a movement will bo initiated among the sheep farmers around Feilding to invite Mr David J. Nathan to give an address on " The frozen meat trade and its expansion." This morning Mr James Norman had on view in his shop in Fergussou street, the carcases of two dairy fed bacon pigs reared by Mr Brennan, which turned the .scales at two hundred pounds each. A meeting of ratepayers willing to assist the Council in carrying into effect the proposal to erect Municipal Chambers will be held in the Council Charaberf to-morrow evening at 8.30 p.m. The clerk of the Kiwitea County Council notifies that a meeting of ratepayers will be held at Birmingham, at noon, on Saturday, 4th May, to discuss the proposals to raise a loan of £685 to construct the Branch and Terrace Roads. The majoritj'- of the English tennisplayers are said to favor a proposed new rule, making- every ball that touches the top of the net during play a "let," thus rendering it necessary to play the whole point over again. The opening of the new Weslcyau Church at Rangiwahia was celebrated on Saturday with a tea and concert. The first services in tho church were conducted on Sunday by the Rev T. R. Richards. Cabbage is an old cure for intoxication. The Egyptians eat it boiled before their other food if they intended to drink wine after dinner, and some of the remedies sold as a preventive of intoxication on the Continent are said to contain cabbage seed. A man who had been placed in a trance was on exhibition in London for 10 days. When restored to consciousness by the operator the man declared that he felt neither il!, hungry nor thirsty, and walked from the building as though nothing unusual had happened. A young lady in Colombia has notified to the municipality that she intends to present herself as a candidate foi a vacancy on the police staff of that town, The Temperance ladies are actively supporting her claims, declaring that the drunken men will be ashamed when they find themselves arrested by a woman. Tae drinking is rapidly becoming a vice among British working women, and it has recently been shown by Miss Winifred Ellis that the miserable condition of the workers in the slate quarries at Maiioueth is very largely due to the inordinate consumption of tea by the men, as well as the women of the district. Members of the local Fire Brigade will notice by an advertisement appearing elsewhere that the annual meeting which was to have been held this evening has been postponed until Wednesday next, the Bth inst. This step has been taken on account of other meetings being held to-night, and the Secretary's absence. We are indebted to the Standard for the following : — At the Police Court yesterday John Connors alias John Brown was charged with stealing a horse valued at £18, the property of Joe For, at Palmerstou North, on 11th February last. From evidence taken it appears that Joe For missed his horse on February 11th from a paddock in Palmerston, and on February 14th found it in possession of Mr James Normon, of Feilding, who had bought it from accused, as his property, for £'14. Accused reserved his defence, and was committed to take his trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court, to be held at Wanganui. An important meeting of church members was held in tho Primitive Methodist church last evening when between twenty and thirty were present. The Rev Mr Cocker being in the chair. The meeting was called for the purpose of considering the advisability of enlarging and beautifying the present building. After some discussion it was decided to enlarge the present structure and Messrs J. Gould, W. Belfit, J. C. Thompson and F. Flavall were appointed a committee to have plans prepared and ascertain the probable cost of the additions. About £50 was promised by those present. The meeting was adjourned to Friday the 10th when the sub-committee will submit their report. Says the Wellington Post; — Some months ago it was announced that negotiations were being carried on by a large Japanese company with a view to running a direct steam service between Australia and Japan. It is quite probable that New Zealand will share in the yen? ture, us a gentleman intimately connected with the commercial community of Japan has been deputed to make enquiries in this colony as to the prospects of Fuch an undertaking. This gentleman, who is at present in Australia, is expected to visit New Zealand about the end of May. but for obvious reasons his mission has been and will be managed very quietly, and no particulars as to bis time of, arrival are definitely known.
