A Livery Stable Destroyed by Fire.
o (Per Press Association.) Wellington, April 28. At about 11.30 last night the largest livery stable- in Wellington owned by John Lane, were destroyed by fire. When discovered the flames had a firm hold, and aided by the inflammable nature ofthe contents ot the building, spread with great rapidity. All the horses were released and got out, but one slipped on the footpath breaking its leg and had to be destroyed. Two inmates had a narrow escape of losing their lives, on)j being, saved by the promptitude nnd energy of Constable Price. The majority of the • brakes, landaus, etc., were saved, hut a large quantity of harness, feed, and other j appliances necessary in tbe management j of this kind were lost. Lane has .£ISOO j in various offices on the plant and feed, but the amount does not cover the loss. The building was insured for i? 500. Had the wind been ia the opposite direction, nothing could have saved Ross's Royal Hotel. The Eon. Mr Seddon called on Mr I_ane, expressing sjmnathy, and offering bis 6table in which to place some of the horses and plant.
