More than two thirds of the houses on the Island of Yap were levelled to the ground and the Governor was injured by living debris, and his residence was unroofed. Most oi the small trading vessels in the vicinity were wrecked, and some lives were lost. Melbourne, April 25. The libel action brought by Mr Downis contractor, against the former proprietors of ihe Herald, relative to the alleged disappearance of documents from the Public Works Department, resulted in a verdict for defendants on all points. This Day, The Judge held the Herald articles on Downie clearly defamatory, but, after a careful review of the evidence, he had come to the conclusion that the imputations were justified by the facts. The Cabinet has considered the proposed retrenchment scheme, and decided to carry it out almost in its eutirety. It is expected that the effect will be a reduction in the estimates for the year of £420,000, The railways are chiefly affected, the extent being £120,000. Hobabt, This Day.
