Local and General News. • . Members of the Cycling Club will meet at their rooms this evening at 8. p.m. Mr A- Fergusson has disposed of his farm at Fowlers to a Bunnythorpe resident. The secretary of the Rugby Union has been notified that the Awahuri Football Club intend to join and play for the Junior Cup. The residents between Birmingham and Pemberton are moving for a Post I office at Peep-o'-day, situated about nine j . miles beyond Birmingham.

Constable Griffiths is on duty here during the absence of Constable Tuohy at Wellington. On Sunday next the offertory at St. Agnes', Krwitea, will be presented to the Vicar as an Easter gift. Mass will be celebrated at St. Bridget's, Feilding, on Sunday at 8 and 11 a.m. Evening service at 3 o'clock. Land and Income Tax returns must be sent to the Commissioner of Taxes by Wednesday next, May Ist. Goats flesh is sold in England as venison. It is quite as palatable and can be cooked as " high " as the real thing. A meeting of those interested in the formation of a Golf Club will be held at the Feilding Hotel this evening at 7 o'clock. All persons interested in the formation of a Golf Club in Feilding are invited to attend a meeting at the Feilding Hotel this evening, at 7 p.m. We are informed by the secretary, Mr Kelleher, the Feilding Debating Society will hold a meeting sometime this month to arrange a programme for the winter. "We regret to have to record the death of the wife of Mr H. Jacob, of Colyton, which took place this morning. We sincerely sympathise with the bereaved husband and family. Messrs Gorton and Son held their monthly stock sale at Feilding to-day. The entries of cattle and sheep were about the average and the attendance very fair. The prices obtained show a hardening tendency. Two coloured women have just been publicly sold by auction in Georgetown, Kentucky. The women were convicted oi vagrancy, and ordered to be sold into slavery for six months. The women were bought by two coloured men for 4s 4id and 8s 4d respectively. The man Brown, with several aliases , who was committed for trial on Wedncsdaj", in Palmerston, on a charge of theft of a draught horse, will also be charged with the theft of another horse from Palmerston, and which it is said he sold to Mr J. Norman, of Feilding. Two men who applied to the Benevolent Trustees at Wellington yesterday for relief, and were offered employment fit 5s ft day carrying sandwich Boards declined. One who said he had bled in the Crimean and Maori wars, stated that if he was to die before he got outside the door he would not do such work. The Harmonic Societj' held their first practice of the season in the Foresters' Hall last evening, when there was a very fair attendance of members notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather. The Rev Innes Jones conducted in the absence of the conductor, Mr Greenwood. Mr Walter Bentley has written to inform us that he proposes to visit Feildiug shortly, when he will give " The Passion Play," full particulars of which will be duly advertised. The lecture has been given to immense audiences in the southern towns, and has been most favorably criticised by the Press. We (Standard) learn that a number of leading farmers in this district, impressed with Mr David Nathan's scheme for the development of the frozen meat trade, are anxious to test the feelings of their fellow settlers on the question, and with that object, intend to call a meeting at an early dato. The depression in trade is not felt so keenly in Dunedin as in the- larger centres. This fact is accounted for by the people having a firm conviction that the worst has come and gone, and that better times are in store for the near future. All the factories are working full time, and there are comparitively no unemployed as in other places. An apple tree in Monicello, Florida, is said to bear on different limbs grafted apples, crab apples, prunes, peaches, pears and quinces. The same experiment was successfully tried in Canterbury (New Zealand) many years ago, but the main stem was a thorn. Some roses were budded on and the effect was remarkable. Last evening a chimney caught fire in Mr Bishop's private residence in Kimbolton road. The flames were extinguished with some difficulty owing to an angle in the brickwork allowing the accumulation of a large quantity of soot. Several members of the Fire Brigade did good service, bnt the firebell was not rung. Mr Bishop handed Captain , Eade a cheque for £2. The Canterbury Land Purchase Board as the outcome of its meetings in Wellington last week, have recommended to the Governmeet the acquisition of some half-dozen estates which are under offer in that district. The Auckland Land Purchase Board, which also met in Wellington, have recommended the Government to purchase one estate of land of those under offer in that province. At the annual meeting of the Eangitikei Hunt Club, the following officers were elected : — President (for life), Mr J. G. Wilson ; Vice-presidents, Mesrs R. Aid worth and W. Hammond, re-elected ; master, Mr D. G. Riddiford, re-elected ; deputy-masters, Messrs J. P. Lethbridge and T. McKenzie ; hon. treasurer, Mr J. P. Lethbridge ; hon. secretary, Mr F. J. Dignan. A meeting of the Pohangma Football Club was held on Tuesday night in Mr Adsett's shed, fifteen members being present. Mr J. Johnston in the chair. A letter was read from the secretary of the Manawatu Rugby Union re combining with Ashurst. It was decided not to amalgamate. The secretary was instructed to arrange matches with Ashurst, Feilding Red Stars and Unions, and that the first match be played against Ashurst in three weeks time. The following players are requested to roll up for a practice next Saturday : — Suburban Township— Adsett (2), Payne, Irwin, Hitchman, Hugbeson, Shadbolt (3), Bolton, Littlejohn, Clarke, Coninui, Roberts (3). Township— McNie, Petersen, Blake, Lucas (3), Watson, Signal, Johnston, Rockel, Denton, Hall, Sullivan, Parish, Sinclair.
