— Captain Russell addressed a crowded meeting at Dunediu last night, and received an unanimous vote of thanks. gjMr John McLaren offers a reward for a carriage rug taken in error from Mr D. Younger's stables. Mr Milson, stationer etc., to-day received his monthly consignment of books and periodicals. There will be mass iv St. Bridget's on Sunday next at 8 and 11 o'clock in the forenoon, and afternoon services at 3 o'clock. Tho Public Works Committee of the Borough Council have selected a ford over the Kiwitea stream on the Kimbolton roadj and men are now at work making it available for traffic. An information has been laid in New Plymouth against Mr E. Smith, M.H.R : , for assaulting Mr Raynor, of the Sydney Bulletin. The grievance was a skit or caricature published by Mr Raynor. A volunteer left behind him in the straw of his tent at the encampment a vest containing a silver watch and chain. They are in sate hands and will be forwarded to the owner on application to Mr Murtagh. Notice is given today that the private road passing through the properties of Messrs L. W. Dalrymple, W. Hunter and J. Purkiss, between Feilding and Sandon, is now closed owing to people using the road leaving the gates open. The Wanganui bowlers defeated the Au'cklanders by 63 points to 47 on Saturday last. Three rinks played, and the game was contested in driving rain. On Tuesday tbe bowlers held another match, when Wanganui was again successful by 54 points to 49. Notice is given to-day by Mr C. Bray, Returning Officer, that nominations for the position of members of the Manchester Road Board will be received by him before noon on Thursday the 25th inst. The election, if necessary, will take place on Friday the 3rd of May. Before leaving Feilding Lieut. -Colonel Pitt, Lieut. -Colonel Newall, and the officers commanding companies at the encampment, complimented and thanked Mr Wilson, the Feilding station master, for the efficient manner in which he performed his arduous duties and his invariable courtesy. Athletes and others should not miss the opportunity which will be afforded them this evening of attending the lecture to be delivered by Dr Hutchinson on " Athletics and bodily training." Those who attend are likely to derive much benefit and information from the lecture, and there will doubtless be a very large number present. No definite news as to the whereabouts of the Oreti was to hand up to the hour of going to press. Rumours were current last evening that the vessel had been totally wrecked at West Wanganui with the los 3of all hands, but as it is highly improbable that news could have reached here from that place, and also in the face of the fact that no official intimation of anything of tho kind is to hand, the assumption is that the rumour is utterly without foundation, and that the steamer is securely sheltered and waiting an opportunity to come on. — Chronicle.
