Tariff Commission.
The Tariff Commission held a sitting at the Council Chambers yesterday. Present—Major Steward, M.H.R. (chairman) and Messrs W. Tanner, J. McGowan, and J. Stevens, M.HR.s , Mr Kane (secretary), and Mr W. H, Russell (shorthand reporter.) Mr D. B. Harris, chemist, who was the first witness, suggested that the duty ' should be taken off empty medicine bottles, . the duty increased on patent medicines and the duty taken off codliver oil and malt, &c. MrW. Park, asked that the present import duty should be taken off copy books and exercise books on the ground that the present system of education is a free one and nothing should be done to hamper it. Rev. Father Patterson asked for the abolition of the duty on statuary, vestments, pipe organs and peals of bells when imported for church purposes'. M. L. Luxford asked for a heavier duty on jarrah timber, which was competing with totara. He also, on behalf of Messrs Richier, Nannested and Co., suggested a duty of £2 a ton on imported (lour. The Commission concluded its sitting it 4 30, and proceeds to Marton by the first train this niorniue — Standard.
