The Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. TUESDAY, APRIL 16, 1895. THE ENCAMPMENT.

» Since the inauguration of Easter encampments of volunteers in the colony we do not remember hearing of one where the officers and men were subjected to greater inconvenience from the weather than at that which was held in Feilding. Only one fine day was experienced, then the rain came down in torrents, and effectually put a stop to anything like genuine work. The steadiness of the men, and the excellent discipline maintained under circumstances which, to say the least of them, wpre very trying to the temper, reflect infinite credit on otti- ! cers and men alike. The greatest good humour prevailed, and not a single complaint was made cither as regards the cooking — which was necesI sarily much interfered with by the t rain— or the tents — which were not so impervious to the wet as they were some ten years ago when in the heyday of their youth. Of coarse it is a 1 matter for regret that the weather prevented the encampment from being a success, and the public witnessing what would have been a grand military spectacle had the sham fight taken place, but the disappointment of the men was much greater than that of the public could possibly bi\ Every volunteer who was present at the encampment held at Porirua the previous Easter knew that the work done there in the direction of instruction was better than that performed on any former similar occasion, and there was an intention i resent in the ininds of all who were at Porirua to ninke the Feilding encampment also a record one. That has certainly happened, but not in the way hoped for, and every volunteer who was y resent will long remember the camp at Feilding. We believe we only express the universal opinion of the people of Feilding when we say that their orderly conduct and general good behaviour has gained our visitors the respect and esteem of every resident in the Borough. We .sincerely hope that whenever th« next encampment is hold the volunteers present will have, better treatment from the weather than they had at Feilding.
