At the Police Court today James Law, saddler, of Outram, was charged with forgery and remanded on bail, Advice has been received that of 120 sheep sent away by the Buteshire for London, only two died on the voyage. This Day. Israel Wendell, 60 years of age, a wine merchant in the Octagon, died suddenly this morning. Wellington, April 2. The Shipmasters' Association have carried a resolution urging the Government to suspend the operation of that part ot clause 31 of the Shipping and Seamen's Act of last session which imposes an annual licensing fee on colonial pilots. The Association considers it bears heavily on the latter, as very few vessels carry coasting pilots. The Benevolent Society Trustees resent the appointment of a general supervisor of charitable aid as suggested by the United District Board. At the annual meeting of the Welling-ton-Manawatu Railway Company the report and balance-sheet were adopted, and a dividend of 6 per cent, carried. Auckland, April 2. The police are commencing fresh raids upon disorderly houses. Kerei Kaihau has been released from Mount Eden gaol after serving a term of imprisonment in connection with the dispute over the Government survey in the i Opuatia Block. There was a gathering of the tribe to celebrate his release Over 300 pictures have been forwarded to the Auckland Society of Art's Exhibition. It is regarded as the best collection for years.
