Per Press Association.) Syrney, March 29. The Bill reducing all future Governors* salary to £5000 was read a second time on division by 36 votes to 31 The Bill then passed through Committee, The Premier agreed that it was an opportune time to consider the matter, but if the Bill passed in its present form it would mean a reduction, including allowances, to £4000. He said the Government intended to reduce the allowance by over £2000, and he asked tbe House to leave the matter in the Ministers' hands. Sir H. Parkes very StroDgly opposed the Bill, and said that in order to get a competent man to fill tbe ofiice it might be necessary nnd might be better to pay £1 0,000 nnd even £20,000 a year. There was plenty of room for retrenchments elsewhere, and it wouid be far better in the true interests of the colony io leave the Governors' salary alone. Sir H. Parkes yoted against tlie Bill. This Day. The labour party were responsible for carrying the reduction in the Governor's salary, few of the Opposition being present, and the strength of the Government unaided was insufficient to defeat the measure.
