The woather was magnificent aod the wicket in perfect order. stodaart was unaole tn play as he t had not quite recovered trom his recect illnes. 'Jbe Colonials went first to the wickets and at tbe close of the day's play had lo?t seven wickets for 230. They made a poor start, losing Lyons for 6, A. Jarvis for 5, and Darling ior 15, three wickets being down for 49. Then George Giften and Heedman made a stand and took the score to 118, when the latter was run out aUer making 4G. Briggs dismissed Dyer's first ball and George Giffen. when fairly set, was taken by Gay behind the wickets off Briggs after compiling 51, l'linman only mado 3 Young Hill and Walter Giffen stopped the rot setting in and put a different complexion on the game for the Colonials. Both batsman showed grand form and completely mastered the bowling, Hill being 1 not out 63 and Giffen not out 05. Richardson was never seen to better advantage with tlie ball and simply mowed down the wickets till the last partnership.
