Land for Settlement.

The Government have just acquired under the Land for Settlements Act from Elder, Smith and Go- the Merivale estate of 9998 acres in Western Southland. It is situated on the main road to the Waian, near the Clifton Ferry, where a large iron bridge is to be constructed across the Waiau. The estate is described as mixed agricultural and pastoral, with a small quantity of forest. The soil rests upon limestone, and is nearly all suitable for farms of from 200 to 300 acres. Fencing material, firewood and milling timber are abundant, and there is good building stone in the vicinity. For the most part the property is well grassed with English grasses, and is perhaps better adapted for cheep farming or cattle grazing than for cropping. There is a plentiful supplf of good water, and there is shelter in all weathers for stock. Possession will be given to the Crown about the middle of next month, and arrangements have already been made to cut up the estate into arears suitable for dairy farms. These will be opened for selection in about three months, the tenure to be lease in per* petuity, — Times.
