Tea and Concert at Birmingham.
The Wesleyan tea meeting and con- i cert, held at Birmingham last evening, was successful in many ways. The weather was nice, eatables good, and singing excellent. Tbe tables were contributed by Mesdames Burne, Bainbridge, Laing, Fowler, Palmer, Torupkins, and Syms. The various tables were presided over by Mesdames Burne and Palmer, Misses Hicks, Richardson, Munro, and Laing. The concert was opened with a hymn, followed by a musical selection by Miss Kirke. Mr Pirani, M.H.R., occupied the chair, and, in addressing the audience, said he was delighted with his last visit to this district, and Apiti. The people seemed so happy and healthy, and many of them should be thankful they did not live in large towns. This gathering was a welcome to Mr Richards. They ought to be pleased that he is to stay in the district. Miss Amy Richardson sang j " Tbe Slave," and Mr W. Barlow » That ; is Love." Mr Carthew, of Feilding, ! addressed the audience, saying he was delighted to see Mr Pirani that evening, he having done a good deal for us, though not our member. Mrs Palmer sang two songs, Mr Baynes the song " Eterual Rest," and Mrs Tompkinsgave a pianoforte solo, "Home Sweet Home." The Rev. Mr Richards gave an address full of anecdote, and the recitation " Carl the Martyr," which was given in excellent style, and being encored, he gave the " Dandy Fifth." Miss Kirke played a piano solo. Mr Stevens sang " Rest to the Weary " and in response to an encore repeated a verse. A vote of thanks to the ladies was proposed by Mr Anyon, mentioning the names of Mrs Palmer, Mrs Richardson, Mrs Anyon, and Mrs R. Burne who worked with great energy during the day. Mrs Tompkins, Miss Kirke, Mrs Palmer and Mr Baynes were the the accompanyists to the singers and did their duty well. The proceeds amounted to L 3 17s 6d.
