Poverty Bay Rye Grass Seed.

The Palmerston Standard in yesterday's issue published the subjoined paragraph : — " In their natural anxiety to save on their expenditure in these hard times several farmers in the district have been making inquiries as to the rates at which they could purchase Poverty Bay rye grass, with the result that they were able to get genuine samples of good seed at from 4s lOd to ss, against over 6s previously quoted. We publish this fact as a misconception appears to have existed as to what Poverty Bay rye is worth." We have been requested to publish the following letter in reply to the above ; — Sir,— A statement has recently found currency with reference to the price of Poverty Bay rye grass seed, which, in justice to ourselves and all other reputable seed merchants, calls for a reply. The statement is to the effect that certain farmers have found that they are able to obtain genuine Poverty Bay rye grass seed at " from 4s lOd to 5s per bushel " as against over 6s per bushel quoted by other firms. We are prepared to bring indisputable proof to show that this statement is absolutely untre. We are, moreover, ready to produce letters from several of the most reliable firms in Poverty Bay showing that no genuine rye grass seed has left thai; district at prices which would allow of its being sold at anything near the rates mentioned in the paragraph referred to, and when freight and other charges are added it will be evident that ' genuine seed could not be sold at such prices. We venture to ask you to insert this, as such statements are calculated not only to harm us, but also more directly the buyers of such seed, whose loss would not be apparent to them until the damage to their pastures and purses is beyond repair.— Yours, etc., Barraud and Abraham."
