The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. SATURDAY, MARCH 16, 1895. "WHAT'S IN A NAME."
The name of the Borough of Palmerston North, under the Designation of Districts Act of last session, has to be changed. The Manawatu Standard says : "It has been suggested that less," inconvenience would arise were the borough to be named * Manawatu,' and the suggestion commends itself as an exceedingly good. We think no better name, under the circumstances, could be given to the Borough." We are not of this opinion, and, at the same time, we feel certain that before the point is settled the burgesses will have a good deal to say on tlie matter. It fis not easy to obtain the popular acceptance of a new name for a district. Birmingham, an important settlement a few miles from Feilding, was named ' Fowlers ' because of the confusion which occurred in sorting letters and papers in the post offices and the mistakes in forwarding them in consequence. Well, what is the result ? Tlie place is still called the old name, while the new designation is only to be found in the Postal Guide, and we fancy that by whatever new* title Palmerston North may be described the old name will be retained by a vast majority of the residents, as well as by those in the surrounding districts. Many of our readers will, no doubt, remember that tlie place was very nearly named * Ujiji ' at the inception of the settlement. Surely the " Chicago of the South," as Palmerston North has often been described in this journal, deserves a more appropriate appellation than ' Manawatu,' which includes, not only a very large district, but another Borough town (Foxton).
