Licensing Questions.
[Per Press Association.] Invercargill, March 14. The Invercargill Licensing Committee to-day granted a transfer of the license of the Gladstone Hotel. The Rev. Mr Woollars said his reason for objecting to the transfer was based on moral grounds, the license having been endorsed. He wished the licensee to understand that what the committee did at the quarterly meeting would not be binding on it. At the annual meeting in June the acting-chairman (Mr Mitchell) said that the committee, having reduced fully 25 per cent., could take the license away for one endorsement only. Mr Woollars replied that eminent authorities contended that the committee could. Wellington, March 14. The Otaki Licensing Court to-day is hearing the application for the transfer of a license from Manakau to Waeroa, about which there has been so much controversy. Mr Gully, Crown Prosecutor, appeared in Opposition on behalf of the residents of the State Farm, Labor Bureau, and police, who contend that no license is wanted at Waeroa. As there are some thirty witnesses summoned, the case will probably last more than a day. Great interest is being taken in it. It is stated the committee will probably grant a transfer. This Day. The Bench decided not to grant the application, but, by a majority of one, recommended the grant of the transfer at the next annual meeting. This leaves the matter at large, the objectors not having made out their case. The annual Convention of the New Zealand Alliance be^an to-day, the principal business being a discussion . upon the Draft Bill to amend the Act now in force, which is being considered seriatim. There was a fair attendance.
