A five roomed house at Dovleston, occupied by Mrs S. Lemmar and owned by A, McLachJan, was destroyed by fire yesterday. The house and furniture were each insured for .£IOO. A four roomed house in Armagh street, owned by W. H. Cooper and occuoied by F. Fox, was burned to-day. The house was insured. Timaru, March 14. Mr E. A. Fitzgerald returned from the Southern Alps to«day after 10 weeks among the peaks and passes. Mr Fitzgerald considers the Southern Alps vastly more difficult than the European, owing to the nature of the rocks and the climate
