Ruapehu in Eruption.

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, March 11. A telegram, received from Tanpo today by Mr Gray, Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department states: — " The clouds have now cleared from Ruapehu, and the emission of steam is as active as it was yesterday, but there is no smoke. At present the eruption is on the eastern corner of the mountain where the cold lake is situated, and steam is falling on the Rangipo plains in dence masses. The sight is very grand, and from appearances is likely to last sometime. The intermittent gey. ser " The Crow's Nest " situated a mile from here, is unusually active, also other hot springs in this locality. No earthquakes were felt nor any warning given of this eruption, although it blew unusually nard on Sunday morning. Some people here with glasses last night thought they saw flames issuing amidst the steam and smoke, but being bright moonlight it was impossible to say for certain. The event has caused great excitement among the native pop. ulation, who fear that some terrible calamity is about to overtake then. Luckily the mountain is almost free from snow, otherwise the Wangaehu Biver would be flooded. A further telegram yesterday states that the waters of the Wangaehu Kiver are thick and muddy, and that the waters of the" Wanganui 'Biver are much discoloured.
