(Per Press Association.) Christchurch, March 11. Cresswell, Captain of the City Guards, had a narrow escape from drowning at New Brighton yesterday. He had gone into the water to bring out a dog, but could not return against the strong under current. A lifebuoy was thrown to him from the pier and he was drawn ashore very much exhausted. The report of the Canterbury Society of Arts states that there are 86 ordinary and 73 working members. The receipts during the year were £1345, and the expenditure £1422. The assets amount to £4409, and the liabilities to £700. Auckland, March 11. The Hauraki mine, Coromandel, yielded 2018ozs of gold, valued at £3 29 per oz, as the result of 80 tons of stone crushed during the month.
