The Stock Market.
Mr C. Carr reports :— I held a most successful sale at Feilding on Friday, the Bth inst., and the attendance was large. About 8000 sheep came forward, besides cattle, and I succeeded in quitting most of the stock at recent values. Although there was no advance in prices, the sale showed signs of improvement, there being a number of buyers. Quotations are as follows : — Cattle.— Yearlings, Jfl 16s ; cows and calves, £B ss> ; fat cows, £.1 to M 3s ; 18-months cattle, 32s 6d to £1 10s; weaners, 20sSheep. — Two-tooth ewes, 5s to 6s 6d ; wethers, 4s lOd to 7s 6d ; aged ewes, 2s 2d to 4s sd ; breeding eweu, mixed ages, 2s 6d to 5s 8d ; woolly lambs, 4s 3d ; shorn lambs, 2s to 3s 3d.
Messrs Lowes and Irons' report on their sale at Masterton on Thursday :— The sale both for quantity of stock and attendance of the public was the record sale of the season, the quality of the stock generally being quite up to the average. The prices were still in favor of buyers, although there was decidedly more life in the sale, inasmuch as nearly the whole of the large entry was sold under the hammer, thus leaving very few lines to be disposed of privately, which is much more satisfactory to all concerned : — Fat wethers, 7s 6d to 8s ; good stores, 6s 4d to 6a 9d ; young wethers, from 4s 6d to 6s 2d ; fat sheep, mixed sexes, 6s Id ; heavy fat ewes, 6s ; breeding ewes, 2s 6d to 5s 6d ; culls, as last, sale ; lambs, 2s 6d to 3s 9d. In cattle, fat steers, £6 2s 6d ; stores, 70s to 95s ; young steers, 18-months, 57s to 6'2s 6d ; young heifers, 50s to 60s ; springing hoifers, 70s to 87s 6d ; cows, 80s to 955. Owing to the lateness of the hour no horses were submitted.
Messrs Gorton and Son report on the cattle sale at Feilding on the Ist instant and stock sales at Sandon and Waituna since made up our sales during the past week. At Feilding considerably over 600 head were yarded and we had to resort to the courtesy of Mr Carr -for the use of his yards. It was a fairly good sale, about 400 were sold, and chiefly under the hammer. At Sandon our yards were filled with cattle and fair entries of sheep. The sale was very dull under the hammer, but a good deal of business was done after at recent rates. At Waituna more than twice the amount of stock came forward than was advertised consequently several hurdle pens had to be erepted to repeive the stock- Bidding was very dull though purchasers were there as was shown by the result, we having disposed of 35 pens of stock, nearly all the business being done after the sale. We must again remonstrate with the public for not advertising their stock it is unfair to themselves and us. In all these sales we had far more stock than advertised, ridiculously so at Feilding and Waituna, tne result is not only does it affect the attendance but we have not sufficient accommodation ready for our clients and we have to conduct the sales with a smaller staff than we otherwise should do which comes very hard upon those who have to do it, in fact our Colonel Gorton who is always fit for a eood deal of work was so completely knocked up after the Waituna sale that he was confined to his bed all the next day. Our quotations are : — Cattle. — Feiiding— Forward bullocks, M 12s 6d ; fat cows, £3 10s to £4 2s ; 2\ to 3 year steers £3 2s 6d to £3 7s 6d ; store cows, £2 10s to £8 9s ; 2-yi: steers, £2 12s ; 18-month steers, £2 5s to £2 5s 6d ; 2-yr heifers, £2 3s ; weaners, 255 ; milkers, various prices, £4 to £1 3s.
