The Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. FRIDAY, MARCH 8, 1895. SHEEP SALES.
Now tl.at there aie evidences of a revival iv the market for sheep, we would like to advise the auctioneers to put down an abuse which has gradually t:r p ii- until it has assumed alarming dimensions. Some years ago Colonel Gorton exclaimed against it and foretold the injury it must ultimately inflict on vendors. We refer to thj uuruber of unadvertised lots which are forced into the sales. Wo do not mean to infer that the would be vendors are any more to blarae than the auctioneers, because it is in the power of the latter to decline to put up Tots which have neither been entered nor advertised before the day of the sale, but those persons whose lots are legitimately before the public have surely the right to protest against what is a manifest injustice to them. They have made the sale, so to speak, by enter ing and advertising their lo;s and no sophistry of any kind whatever will ever persuade them that they have not the fullest right to all and every of the advantages of their enterprise. All others who attempt to derive a benefit from such publicity without bearing a proportionate share of the first coet, are guilty of an unfair act to say the least of it, A small owner will often enter a line when he can see by the advertisement what he has to compete against, and it is hard on him when a large proprietor, who has given no notice whatever of his intention, runs a heavy flock against the small man and spoils his market.
