GREAT EXCITEMENT OVER THE MATCH.
Sydney, This Day. There is tremendous excitement here over the cricket match. Yesterday the tension became intense as the English* men steadily overhauled their opponents. "Wild and continuous cheering greeted the brilliant victory. Melboubne, This- Day. Just before play began yesterday. Black bam expressed his opinion the Australians could win, as he thought their bowling strong enough. " Gut match " was the universal cry when the English captain lost his wicket by the first ball ; but when Brown went in and began to bang the bowling all over the field the scene changed. The little Yorkshireman ran up his first 40 in eighteen minutes, and 120 in eighty-five minutes. All the bowling was alike to him. Equally effective was Ward's performance. Both had the bowling completely at their mercy. The weakness of the Australian's bowling principally accounted for the victory. The fielding was good enough for any« thing, but the bowling was undeniably weak and not up to the previous form of the same men. The crowd was extremely generous, and nothing deserving passed unrecognised. When the winning stroke was made the people stood up and cheered as heartily as they could have done had the result been the other way. Stoddard was naturally delighted witb the victory. In his opinion his men are just a little above the best Australian eleven ; but they showed so much tail in the first innings, and 297 seemed such a big task, that he was doubtful about the issue. Stoddard said a very significant thing to Turner as he was bidding him goodbye : — " I ought to shake hands with you sincerely, for you helped us to win the match." This, was in reference to Turner's non-inclusion in the team. Giffen attributed his defeat to the phenomenal batting of Ward and Brown, and admitted the Australian bowling was weak, and not up to form, and thought the team would have been stronger if C. McLeod or Eady were included. He gave the Englishmen every credit for their win.
