The Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. TUESDAY, MARCH 5, 1895. THE TURN OF THE TIDE.

— ♦ — - Whether the marvellous gold output of the Waihi mine iv Auckland, and the consequent impetus giving to mining work and speculation there has anything to do with it we are not prepared to say, but there can be no question that there is a strong revival of confidence in the northern portion of this island. That feeling is gradually extending down the coast. It has brightened up New Plymouth, and had a marked beneficial influence on the prices of stock, as was evidenced at the great sale held not many days ago by a well known firm of auctioneers at Hawera. Whether the " panic " in the sheep market was justified or not is best known to those most interested, but there are now reliable signs that it is practically over, sheepowners are not so dispondent as they were, and the gloom ia departing from them. They have now some hope of better

times, and with reason. No doubt, although in but a small degree, the benefits of the Advances to Settlers Act, are beginning to be felt. Money is obtainable at much cheaper rates to take up mortgages falling due, while the Banks are anxious to employ some of the capital lying idle in their coffers, in legitimate advances for the purposes of commerce or agriculture. All that is wanted in our own immediate neighborhood is the presence of that feeling of confidence which has appeared among the settlers further up the coast. There is no reason why it should not. Our land and stock are quite as good as theirs and cur settlers are equally competent and energetic. We are glad to notice that prospecting parties have been formed for the purpose of making a thorough examination of the ranges for the discovery of minerals — gold if possible— and hope their efforts will have some good results.
