Feilding State School Committee
The regular montuly meeting of the above wag held in the schoolhouse last evening. Present— Messrs W. Carthew (chairman), W. G. Haybittle (secretary), J. Taylor, R. J. Thompson, H. Worsfold, "VV. G. Shearer, A. Eade, and Dr Sorley. The minutes of the previous meeting were fead and confirmed. Correspondence was received and dealt with as follows : — From the secretary Wanganui Education Board, stating that the Board had placed the Feilding State School on the list for enlargements to be considered when the Boaid is in funds. Also, enclosing voting papers. From B. C. Robins, G. Carson, and J. Ross, soliciting this committee's vote at the forthcoming election to fill the vacancies on the Education Board. From T. Ronayne, general manager New Zealand railways, stating that the Department intended to encourage excursions by school children by reducing the railway fare as follows for such excursions : From 7to 25 miles, children 6d and adults who were in charge Is ; from 26 to 50 miles, children Is, adults 2s ; 51 miles and over, children Is 6d, adults 3s. These tickets were for return on day of issue only. Ten children out of every hundred (poor people's only) would be carried free, who from exemplary conduct and regular conduct merited the concession. From the Traffic Manager, in reply to a letter from the chairman, stating that the Department would carry children from the Feilding station at the rates for 50 miles. From the manager of the Castlechff railway, in reply to Mr Carthew, offering to run a train to Casfclecliff if there are 300 children at 4d for children and 6d for adults. From A. Hatrick and Co., stating they would run an up-river excursion steamer as far as Kaiwhake at 6d for children and Is for adults ; provided there was a minimum of £4. The school log-book was read. The head-master's report was read, showing the average attendance for last week was 296. He reported that the improvements had not yet been completed to the school. In the infants' room three holes were required in the ceiling, and in Standard 111 room five windows should be made to open. Repairs to the fences and gravel were much required. Proposed by Mr Worsfold, seconded by Mr Shearer, That the attention of the Board be called to their neglect of duty in not completing the work they undertook to do some months ago as regards the ventilation of the school. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Taylor, seconded by Dr Sorley, That the Board be requested to carry out the work as stated in the head-master's report, it being urgently needed. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Worsfold, seconded by Mr Eade, That this Committee again urge upon the Wanganui Education Board the necessity of immediately enlarging the Feilding School.— Carried. In speaking to the motion, Mr Worsfold said he was determined not to allow this matter to rest, and he strongly condemned the action of the Board for not erecting additions to the school when there was such a want of extra room, which caused some parents to keep their children at home. Other members concurred in this opinion. Resolved, That this committee vote for Messrs G. Carson, J. H. Fry, and the Rev. J. Ross to fill the vacancies on the Education Board. Mr Shearer thought that by the next election the Committee should get a losal man to contest a seat on the Education Board, as they did not get sufficient justice from the present members. Proposed by Mr Eade, seconded by Mr Worsfold, That the children's excursion to Castlecliff (Wanganni) be on Friday, the 15th inst. Resolved, That the chairman, secretary, and head-master be a committee to carry out the necessary arrangements for the excursion. Resolved, That Messrs Taylor and Shearer be the Visiting Committee for the ensuing month. This was all the business, and the Committee adjourned.
