GREAT EXCITEMENT OVER THE MATCH.
Sydney, This Day. Tremendous excitement is evinced over the cricket match, and immense crowds thronged the streets in front of the newspaper offices and block the tram traffic. Melbourne, This Day. The city is simply wild over the cricket match, and the races fade into insignificance beside it. Giffen was much abused by the crowd yesterday for keeping himself on so long, though they changed their tune when he took four wickets in quick succession. Ford did not think he was out to Trott, believing the ball to hit the ground first. A better catch than that which dismissed Briggs could not have been seen. McLaren's innings was an exhibition of clever, cautious, and stubborn cricket. He was badly fatigued at the close after a protracted stay in the. baking sun. The Australians cordially applauded him when he left. It is pretty certain the match will las,t over to-morrow, for though the weather is close and muggy to-day it's pretty safe it will continue fine.
