GREAT TRIUMPH FOR THE JAPANESE. THE CHINESE DEFEATED IN ALL ENGAGEMENTS. CHINA' S NAVY DESTROYED. [Per Mail Steamer; . Auckland, This Day. Advices from Chefoo on February Bth state that the Japanese have carried all the positions at Weihaiwei. They captured or sank the whole of the Chinese northern fleet. The Japanese, during the night of Monday, cleared Weihaiwei harbour of all the torpedoes and submarine mines by the skilful use of small torpedo boats and steam launches from fcbe warships, which grappled for and cut wires connecting the submarine mines with the shores. The fleet of Japanese torpedo boats made a splendid dash for the harbour, and attacked the Chinese fleet with such success and skill that the battleship Ting Yuen was sunk. Following this splendid success the Japanese completed the capture of Weihaiwei yesterday by landing a large force and seizing the Island of Lien Kuug Tao, -which, had made a gallant defence against the heavy fire. Some of the Japanese "warships passed Chefoo early this morning, and fired a few shots at the forts without doing any damage. In view of the reports current regarding a feint attack made upon Niuchai yesterday a belief grows that the Japanese are going to attack Chefoo. A despatch from Weihaiwei .says the Japanese, desiring to attack the western forts and those distant two miles along the shores, which were covered by the Chinese fleet, tho advance guard was compelled to make a toilsome march on Friday during a snow storm. The loss on the Japanese side was 30 killed and 20 wounded. A despatch from Shanghai says there is an intense foreign feeling on the Shang Teung Peninsula. The American missionaries are fleeing hastily. Ciiki-00, February 8. The Japanese landed troops near hero last evening with the intention of capturing the city. A landing was made about 10 miles cast of Chefoo. An immediate advance upon the city was ordered. The Japanese are attacking the fort defending the eastern part of Chefoo. Hiroshima, February 8. An official despatch from the Japanese commander at Weihaiwei announces that the Chinese warships Cheun Y T uen and Ting Tean, and Chinese cruiser Chin Yuen (or Baquen) were sunk by the Japanese torpedo boats. In an attack just made upon the remaining warships of China at Weihaiwei two launches escaped but were chased by tbe Japanese vessels and disabled near Cbefoo. Washington, February 9.
