The Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 1895 THE TARIFF COMMISSION.

The persona who up to the present time have given their evidence before the Tariff Commission have been so rabid in their views and ideas in favor of Protection, that even the members of the Commission, whose tastes are known to t>:^ iff. that direction, have become sickened with the absolute selfishness displayed. We are told that on Tuesday last before the. geueral work of the Commission began at Invercargill, Mr T. McKenzie, M.H.R., referred to the fact that owing to the Commissioners sitting mainly id the principal centres, the Protectionist yjajsr was of necessity more placed before them, and consequently the Commission was deprived of the opposite opinions held by the country people. He suggested that an invitation be sent to the Presidents of Agricultural and Pastoral Societies and Farmers' Clubs to attend. The Commission unanimously approved the suggestion, and will issue the invitations. This decision will meet th« ha^tty approval of the country people who hs.s£ : with reason, grave cause for anxiety oa the subject. No better choice of country zepreatoatyives could be made than the gentlemen indicated; for tlio^ arc peculiarly

fitted by their local knowledge and experience to give the Commission the fullest information as to where injudicious protective duties obstruct the Agricultural and Pastoral industries.
