Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. THURSDAY FEB. 28, 1895. RRODUCE SHOWS.
Hfaling witi the subject of Agriculiur 1, Horticultural, and Produce soci ''its, the Hawera Star, in urging growers to bring forward as many entries as possible to such exhibitions, says "It is only by this kind of comparison that producers can judge of what they them. selves are growing or making, where the vain can have their vanity lessened by inspecting the super-excellence of others, and the modest be encouraged j ;o further exertions by seeing how much their care and attention has , carried them to^a?ds excellence than is tho case with their less .careful neighbours. It should also be recol lected that our competitors for sale of produce in the Old Country are tradesmen who have served a long ap prenticeship to the making of the particular product thay offer for sale, whilst in the colony the producers are drawn from all classes, who in many instances late in life adopt the industry they follow. There are many of them amateurs, and need technical instruction. At these shows they can educate themselves by comparison." It is too late for Feildiog to have an Autumn show, but we think some steps should be taken soon for holding one in the Spring. Competitors would theo have time to prepare exhibits.
