— : « Conspquent upoQ the depression in agricultural farming in England last year, and the necessity for poraons depending thereon to cast about for other meaas to gain a living, poultry rearing received a great stimulus from which satisfactory results are confidently anticipated. We are informed by the London Times, of January 4, that this was due to the public spirit of one of .the City Companies, tbe
Poulters' Company, having offered valuable prizes and other distinctions ' 'or the best displays o£ table poultry ' it the annual show of the British Dairy Farmers' Association, and at i Show held iu connection with the Smithfield Club. As poultry rearing is an industry capable of being largely developed in this country, and there will always be a ready market in Europe for any surplus, we would urge on our settlers to consider this remunerative and at the same time comparatively easy means of adding to their incomes. In order to encourage them we would suggest that the l^eilding Horticultural Shows be again held. While they lasted their success was undoubted, and the amount of good accomplished is proved by the splendid specimens of fruit, flowers, and dairy produce which are now available in every part of the district that came within their sphere of influence. We have now, what we did not have during the continuance of the Feilding Shows, on all sides of us cheese, bacon, and butter factories, the Directors of which would gladly contribute exhibits that would in the aggregate be a help to the Shows and at the same time a benefit to their several Companies by making known the quality of their several productions. If liberal prizes were given for the best exhibits of poultry— dressed and ready for market — of certain described breeds of recognised excellence, the desired end would be accomplished within a very short time, and after a few years a regular Poultry Show might be inaugurated to test by comparison the progress made in the improvement of breeds. The poultry imported into England in 1893 was valued at £478,959 and eggs at £3,875,639, a total of £4,354,598. These figures need no comment.
