The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. WEDNESDAY. FEB. 20, 1895. FROZEN MEAT FOR JAPAN.

-•- — In a letter to the Marton Mercury, Colonel Gorton rankes sotiio very sensible suggestions on the subject of frozen meat After pointing out the difficulties which are to be mot with, and the obstructions which have to be removed in connection %vith the English market, he proposes Japan as a good opening. Tho popla of that country aie s. lendid organisers, are exceptionally good business moa, and willing to adopt new customs which are beneficial to them. As a nation they are fond of mutton, but have to send to China for it as they cannot rear sheep thunseives. We will now let the Colunel speak for himself. He writes: " What I think should be done, and at once, is for all Unfreezing companies in New Zealand to co-operate and eeud a cargo of frozen mutton to Japan and try to sell it to the Japanese from the steamer's side, c-hould the Japanese take to it, and more particularly if their Grovernnient toos the matter up, it might b^ the means of creating a trade with that country at once, and depots could be established at the principal ports for the reception and storing of frozen rueat. It n-.uat not be lost sight of that the population of Japan exceeds that of Great Britain, and should we be fortUDate enough to es tablish a trade there it would lead to a further trad© in wool and other commerce. The cost of sending a shipment, if borne by all the freezing companies of New Zealand, would be very small and I feel sure that a large number of sheepowners would gladly send sheep to try the experi ment, and if it failed it would not be a very great loss, if it succeeded it would be such a gain to us that it would convert our present terrible Btate of depression iuto one of pros perity, and surely what I suggest is worth the risk of trying If a cargo was sent, a man of the greatest ex perience should be sent with it, fully empowered to eptablieh depots at the ports if it was found the Japanese favoured the opening up of the trade. I should cay this is a matter the Government might well take up, but as time is of the essence of this subject I commend my suggestion to the different freezing companies."
