In order to give our employes an opportunity of witnessing the Cycling Sports on the Oval to-morrow (Wednesday) afternoon tho Star will be published at noon instead of at 3 p.m. as usual. Advertisers will please note the alteration. One can have no greater enemy than a violent temper. Train services for the Feilding Cycling Sports to be held to-morrow are advertised to-day. There will not be any shooting competitions at the butts to-morrow afternoon. A bottle-nosed whale about 20ft or 30ft long was stranded on Mana Island on Friday morning. At a meeting of the Feilding Cycling Club last evening it was decided to admit competitors to the sports free of charge. Mr James Nelson, of Nelson Bros., London, has invented a process under which he claims that he will complete the thawing of mutton in five hours and beef iu eleven hours. Messrs Gorton aud Son will hold their annual sheep fair at Feilding on Friday next, the 22nd instant. Upwards of 8000 sheep are now entered for the sale. The date of Messrs Gorton aud Son's special sale at Feildiug has been altered to Friday, March Ist, instead of Wednesday, 27th February, because of the Palmerston races to be held on the latter date. Tenders are invited by the Manawatu County Council for forming and metalling 40 chains on Taylor's Line. Specifications can be seen at the County office, Sandon, and at Canning's store, Campbelltown. Since the weekly half-holiday was observed on Saturday in Auckland, the sale of fruit on Sunday has largely increased. People are always the better "in mind, body, and estate " who eat plenty of wholesome fruit — whatever day of tbe week. Apples and Australian wines are great moral reformers. On Friday evening next a harvest festival thanksgiving service will be held at St. John's Anglican Church, when the Rev. R, Young; of Palmerston North, will preach the sermon. Contributions of fruit, flowers and vegetables will be received at the Church on Friday afternoon. Messrs Kirkcaldie and Stains announce in par advertising columns to-day that their half-yearjy sale will continue for another week, duiing which they will offer special inducements to visitors from the country to their popular drapery and clothing establishment in Wellington. No motive is assigned for the act. At the inquest a verdict that the deceased committed suicide while temporarily insane was returned. The first mail was sent in to the new post office at Ruahine to-day, Mr J. Liong being entrusted with the mail contract. Mr Carthew's usual monthly case of English books and periodicals arrived this afternoon. The consignment is quite up to tho usual standard, and many really excellent new publications are included. A runaway horse attached to a spring cart caused a little excitement in town this morning. The blinkers were taken off the horse, to allow it to graze by the roadside, by a young man left in charge, whereupon the animal took fright and bolted. Beyond a little hair knocked off the horse's legs no damage was done. A meeting of subscribers to the Taranaki war relief fund, .£470 of which is now lying in the Union Bank of Australia, was held yesterday. After some discussion, the meeting ad:ourned in order that legal advice regarding the fund might be obtained by Dr Campbell, in Auckland. The following team will represent the Feilding Polo Club iu the match against Rangitikei, at Bulls, on Saturday next : — No. 1 team : Strachan (1), Gorton (2), Giesen (8), Pickering (back) ; No. 2 team: Lewis ll), Cooper (2), Elkiugton (3), French, (back). Lunch wiLl be provided for the visiting team at Coyle's Hotel. In view of the expected continuation in the depressed state of the meat market Messrs Nelson Bros, and Co. have intimated to their clients in this district that they will not enter into any fresh contracts as the existing ones lapse. This means a very serious state of affairs for this district, and for the Wanganui Freezing Works in particular. — Mercury. A meeting of the Education Board Executive was held last evening. The tenders for the painting contracts were considered, and the following accepted: — Messrs Tingey : Patea, Manutahi, Mosstown, Campbelltown, Feilding, Taonui, Beaconsfield, Cheltenham, Upper Taonui, and Awahuri Schools ; Mr Hughes : Haicombe, Sansou and Stanway Schools; Mr Lipsham, Makino Road School ; Mi Francis, Carnarvon School. The resignation of Mr Howard, teacher at the Parawanui School, was received, and it was decided to recommend Mr McConocbie to the Committee. Mabel Harrison was appointed cadet at the Marton School. Mr J. Bett, coach-builder, has ou view at his establishment at Palmerston a patent sheep-feeding box, whicl: is said to be a great improvement on the ordinary feed boxes in use amongst farmers. The new invention is manufactured so that it cau be attached tc the ordinary boxes, and a prominent feature is its strength and durability A small platform is provided for tl« sheep to reach the feed, aud immediately their weight is on the platform the feed box opens by a spring movement When the sheep have finished feedint and leave the platform the box closes , up tightly, thus protecting the content; . from damage by birds, exposure to tlu : weather, etc. The top is covered witl light canvas, which can bo opened uv the full length to insert the feed.
