Imprisonment for Debt.

A return to an order of the House of Representatives has just been circulated giving a number of particulars in regard to committals to prison under the Aboli tion of Imprisonment for Debt A.ct. The total number of judgment summonses issued in 1891 was 1958 ; in 1892. 2095 ; in 1893, 2309. The number of orders for committals was in 1891, 635 : in 1892 ; 775 ; and in 1893, 895. The actual number imprisoned was in 1891, 41 ; in 18i»2 49 ; and in 1893, 45. The Wellington Provincial District furnished 12 prisoners; Auckland, Hawke's Bay, and Ocago, 9 each ; Taranaki, 3 ; Canterbury, 2 ; and Marlborough 0. There were no committals in either Canterbury or Westland.
