THE OCEAN STEAMER GASCOIGNE SAFE. PEOPLE FROZEN TO DEATH IX THE STREETS. (Per Press Association). London, February 12. The Serpentine is covered with ice to the depth of six inches and Loch Lomond is frozen nearly to tbe centre. Information has been received that the missing steamer Gascoigne has returned to New York. The Gascoigne broke her shaft, which accounts for the long voyage. Eighteen steamers are icebound in the Thames. Many pedestrians in the streets of London were so overcome by the cold that they fell exhausted, and were frozen to death. One coroner in the East End held inquests on nineteen people who had met their death in this way. Funds are being raised in the provinces in aid of the workmen who have been thrown out of employment on account of the severe wenthpr.
