Wanganui Education Board.
The Board resumed yesterday morning. Present— Messrs Sanson (chair), Fry, Beckett, Hurley, Ross, Baker, and Carson. Scholarships. — "_\li- Hurley moved, That scholarship regulation No. 2 be amended by the addition of the following words, " except as regards the respective ages of the competitors at the examination to be held in December 1895, which shall be raised by six months. Mr Ross seconded the motion, and after discussion, it was put and carried, Messrs Ross, Beckett, Sanson, Carson, and Baker, supporting, and Mr Fry opposing. Tuition for Teachers. — Mr Sauson reported on and supported the suggestion made at last meeting that tutors for the instruction of teachers, etc., should be appointed in the principal centres under the government of the Board. He pointed out that about three-fourths of the teachers of their staff stuck at E. certificate, which was a most undesirable state of things. Mr Baker, as one of the committee, submitting the report, warmly supported it adoption. Mr Carson believed that the Board should give great facilities to their teachers in order to encourage them in their studies. Mr Baker agreed with Mr Carson that the matter should not be too hurriedly dealt with. I Mr Ross supported the proposal. The matter was held over till next meeting. Apiti — Tenders for additions to Apiti school were opened, and that of Mr Fanthorpe was accepted. Pohaugiaa. — Correspondence with reference to the informality of certain letters addressed by the chairman of the Committee to the Board was read from certain members of the Committee, together with the chairman's reply, stating that the letters were forwarded with the full concurrence of a majority of the Committee, and that the letters were not sent as from a formal meeting, although signed by him as chairman. —Resolved that it was a matter for the Committee to settle among themselves. A letter from Mr A. E. Welsh, teacher, notifying that he had opened school in the Pohangina township. Resolved that the amount of expenses incurred in removal be refunded to the teacher. Mr J. Milne, M.A , b -ad master of the Waverley (Wanganui) school, has been appointed second inspector under the Board. Pemberton. — Letters were read from the Chairman of the Pemberton Com: mittee and from the Rangiwahia Committee repeating the offer of the settlers to erect buildings at their own expense, On the motion of Mr Baker it was resolved that the Board could see no reason to depart from its deoision of last meeting. Applications for enlargement at Marton and Feilding were placed on the urgent list A letter was rend from Mr A. A. Browne, secretary, with reference to the reduction that had been made in his salary. Mr Carson moved that the further consideration of the matter be held over £ill next meeting. Mr Sanson seconded the motion, and in doing so said Mr A. A. Browne had been adequately paid for everj'thing that he had done for the Board. The Board then adjourned.— Chronicle.
