Otara Bridge.

On Saturday evening at Pemberton a meeting of ratepayers was held to receive the report of a deputation which waited on the Kiwitea County Council re raising a special loan towards constructing the Otara bridge. The meeting was well attended and, Mr J. Stent presided. Mr J. D. McGregor stated that the deputation was unable to prevail on the Council to go on with the work, but they had received from that body a definite reply as to the conditions under which it was prepared to build a bridge, which were as follows : — " That if the ratepayers interested in the Otara bridge are willing to raise a loan to provide one half of the cost of the approaches, viz M .£IOOO, and completing the formation of the road from Pemberton, the Council would favorably consider proceeding with the Otara bridge as soon as funds would permit." Mr SlcGregor gave those present a quantity of information with regard to the estimated cost of the approaches, etc. He was of opinion that a rate on £38,196, tb.B valuation of the proposed special rating district, would be sufficient to provide the interest on a loan of .£BOOO. He also quoted figures showing the advantage to be gained in sending goods from Rangiwahia to Wanganui via Mangaonoho, as compared with forwarding to Wellington via Feilding. After further discussion it was proposed by Mr Wood, " That the proposed special rating district be altered so as to include Rangiwahia and sections 1, 52, and 54, Block 4, and that a loan be raised for the following works; — £625 for approaches to the bridge, for completing tbe road from the end of the Whare road to the approach, and to complete the metalling of the Kimbolton road. from the township of Rangiwahia to tho end of the Pemberton Block."—Carried. Messrs E. McGregor, W. Basher, and F. Pemberton were appointed to wait on the Council a.t their next meeting and request them to put the Kimbolton road at this end in thorough repair. With a vote of thanks to Mr McGregor and the chairman the meeting adjourned.
