Shanghai, February 11. , The Japanese warships chased the ' , Chinese torpedo boats for hours, sinking them one by one. ] The first attempt of the Japanese to ! force Weihaiwei was a failure, the Jap- j anese batteries ou the shore mistaking bhe firing of their own boats for those of the Chinese. The third and fourth attempts proved successful, though at the cost of five boats. The Chinese authorities have cabled full powers to their envoys regarding the terms of peace. It is alleged that the United States is prepared to recognise the independence of Corea. The value of the property acquired by Japan by her victories in the war against China is estimated at 100,000,000. The whole of the islands of Linking Too (?) arc now captured. Fort Jistas was blown up.
