Anglican Synod.
(PEE PRESS ASSOCIATION) Nelson, February 5. The principal business before the Synod to-day was Archdeacon Harper's motion, " That the Synod is of opinion that it is desirable that the Education Act should be amended to contain provision for imparting religious instruction by teachers in public schools on the model o£ the. London Sohool Board generally, with the use of the Bible text book, known as the Irish National School Book of Scripture lessons, with a Conscience Clause. There was a very long discussjon, the tenor of which was that half a- loaf was better than no bread. Most speakers declared themselves not altogether satisfied with the text book, but saw no prospect of getting anything practical outside of it. <»-• The m.otjon was put in three parts. The nrs."t part tq '•* generally " was carried on the voices, there being only one dissentient. T/he second part was put as follows ?— •• With the use «f the Irish National School Book of Scriptural Jjes* sons." Carried on the voioes, there being only two noes. The third part was put as follows :— " And with a Conscience Clause," and was carried unanimously. The result was greeted with applause. • -•• Sir John Hall brought in a Bill to provide that women as well as men may vote at parish meetings. The second reading; was appointed, for Thursday.
