An Interesting Point. (Per Press Association.)
Melbourne, February 4. An important judgment has been given in the Supreme Court as a part of the Government retrenchment scheme. The Minister of Education, in February last, dispensed with 67 married lady schoolteachers. Mrs Mattingley, one of them, instituted proceedings for wrongful dismissal, and Justice A'Beckett decided that a circular, issued announcing dismissals was illegal in the mode of dismissal, but formal notice was unnecessary and the action of the Minister on the main question was upheld. Costs and *70 salary from the date of dismissal to date of answering petition was awarded. Plaintiff's case was brought as a test one.
