Postal Conference.

o (Per Press Association). Hobart, February 4. The Postal Conference decided to refei r the question of tbe compulsory use of c universal telegraph code to the heads oi the departments. . Tbe Conference eat till 10.30 o'cloci last night in order to let Mr Ward away. Mr Fyah, of Tasmania, will now represent New Zealand. The latter took occasion to refer in eulogistic terms to the business like manner in which Mr Ward conducted the matters in which he took interest. Mr Ward had a lengthy interview witb the Premi-r of South Australia on tbe question of reciprocity between the two colonies, and it is understood to be likely some practical result will follow. Before tbe conference began it was understood the press rates to New Zealand would be considerably increased but when the question was discussed the Hon. Mr Ward absolutely opposed the alteration, and his wish was deferred to Mr Duffy, Postmaster-General for Victoria, sails for New Zealand on Friday and will probably be accompanied by Mr Turner, Premier. Negotiations have been opened between Mr Ward and Mr T. Grayson, Huddart'B representative, respecting the Vancouver service, and will bs continued in London Mr Ward will meet Mr Huddart himself and the Dominion Government representative. Sir J. Pender's reply to Mr Ward's motion respecting the guarantee for the international and N.Z. cable is expected to morrow Mr Ward has left to join the Orotava at Adelaide He had an interview with the Premier ol Tasmania with reference to tbe control of Macquarie Islands, and requested that New Zealand should be allowed to control them in the tame manner as tbe Auckland and Campbell Islands. The difficulty of preventing seal poaching at the present time was pointed out by Mr Ward. Sir E. C. N. Braadon said that Tasmania would not consent to the cession of the Islands, but would favourably entertain giving New Zealand control of them. VI r Ward promised to place the matter before his colleagues.
