Feildine Library Committe.

0 v — + The annual meeting of the Public Library Committee was held in the Borough Council Chambers last evening. Present — Messrs J. H. Stevens, J. Cobbe, G. W. Fowles, A. R. Allan, McLean, T. Watson, L. E. Reade, and the Rev. W. Dawson. Prior to the election of officers, the retiring chairman (Mr Stevens), in his address, gave some interesting statistics of the year's work. He said there were about 1000 volumes in the Library, of which 803 were current literature, the balance being travel, science, history, etc., which, curiously enough, were never asked for, This he attributed to tho high standard of the modern novel, except, of course, those known as " the everlasting woman" series. One hundred and one new books were purchased during the year. Two thousand books were taken out by sixty subscribers, the highest number taken by one subscriber being 168, or over three per week. He referred to the good service rendered by the late secretary (Miss Goodbehere), and regretted her inability to attend the meeting. He wished the committee to make the chairmanship a successive position and not a continuous one. _ The election of officers resulted in M» Stevens being re-appointed chairman and Mr Allan treasurer. Mr T. Watson was elected secretary. " The Librarian reported that there were, during the' past month, 59 general subscribers and nine young peoples', to whom 159 books had been issued. One new work had been added to the Library. Tho Treasurer's report showed a credit balance of £20. A letter was received from the librarian, applying for an increase of salary. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Fowles, seconded by Mr McLean, That the librarian's remuneration be increased from 12s 6d to Ids a week, and that he be allowed 10 per cent, on all new subscriptions obtained. Messrs McLean and Watson were appointed a sub-committee to purchase pw bgo^s, tp the extent of £5. Also, to enquire 'and repppt at next meeting as to 'magazines and newspapers for th? reading-room. Mr Allan offered to place the 1895 numbers of the Review of Reviews on the reading-room table, free of charge. Resolved, That a vote of thanks be accorded to Mr Allan for his gift.
