The Fielding Star, OROUA & KIWITEA COUNTIES GAZETTE. Published Daily. FRIDAY FEB. 1, 1895. Local and General News.

A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Education Board will be held this evening. Lord Beaeonsfield never cai-ried an umbrella nor a watch. He knew his company. There will be mass in St. Bridgets on Sunday. next at eleven o'clock in the forenoon. Entries for Messrs Abraham and Williams sale at Palroerston on the 7th inst and Pohangina on the 12th idem are now advertised. Messrs H. Wollerman and Co. insert a business advertisement to-day. The firm will hold auction sales of produce every week commencing on Saturday the 9th instant. The next sitting of the District Court which commence on Thursday, February 7th, will be presided over by Mr Martin, S.M., of Wellington, in the absence of Judge Kettle. The ram fair will be continued to-day when the Romneys will be offered. Bidding yesterday was decidedly slow, and to effect sales, breeders had to dispose of their sheep at low prices. At an Inglewood wedding lately one young woman who resented being showered with rice, broke her new umbrella over the head of the offending thrower of the obnoxious " swamp seed." Tenders for painting the school houses in the Campbelltown, Feilding, Makino Halcombe, Taonui and Sandon schools, etc., are invited by Mr Atkins, the architect of the Wanganui Education Board. The present system of recording clock and tell-tale registers at the Government Buildings is to be abolished, and a system of electrical registers, similar to those adopted at Porirua Asylum, will take its place. This is most appropriate. The Public Trustee invites separate tenders for the lease of properties in Kiwitea in the estate of W. Benson, deceased. Conditions, etc., can be seen at the office of Mr W. Rutherford, agent for the Public Trustee, Rangitikei street, Palmerston North. It is rumoured that either District Judge Kettle or District Judge Ward will be appointed in conjunction -with one of the Judges of the Native Land Court as Commissioners to enquire into the dealings in respect of the Horowhenua Block. If the distance run in the 440 Yards Hurdle Race at the Napier Caledonian Society's sports on Wednesday be accurate, and the time returned (58secs) is also correct, then A. W. Watts, of Feilding, the winner of the race, has put up a world's- record for the distance. — Herald. To-day Dr Harris announces by advertisement over leader, that he has commenced the practice of his profession in Feilding. Dr Harris may be consulted at his private residence in Grey street, nearly opposite the Wesleyan church, or at Mr Woollams, chemist, Manchester street. A women's paper, to be called The Emancipator, will be published in Wellington next week. A Feilding girl of the " new woman " style hints that the name is misappropriate because there is a " man " and a " pater "in it. She feels sure " Galaxy " would be better. It is rumoured on the West Coast that, after the Premier has taken up his residence in Wellington he will not stand for his old constituency again, but will woo the suffrages of the Palmerston North electors. Should such be the case it is highly probable the present Mayor of Palmerston, Mr W. Park, would be invited to oppose him. The heavy gale of wind which prevailed yesterday was the cause of spreading fires in the bush country to the east and north of Feilding, but as far as we can learn no serious damage has been done and only portions of fences and pasture were burnt. The fires were checked to some extent by the heavy rain which fell during the night. The fall of fruit in the various orchards was something phenomenal. The Government expect to complete very soon the purchase of the Rotoma-hana-Parakarangi Block in the Hot Lakes District. It comprises about 167,---dQO acres, and includes the famous Tikitapu Lake," besides several other lakes of lesser note, The price wil not exceed an average of 3s per acre. There are close upon 3000 Natives interested in the block. Mr R. J. Gill, Land Purchase Officer, is carrying on the negotiations for the purchase. ' A public meeting of the creditors of Mr F. W. Brown, publican, of Bunnythorpe, was held before the D.0.A., at Palmerston, yesterday. The following creditors were present : — Messrs Hodren T. Parkins, and A. Mowlem (proxy for W. Priest. Timaru) and M. A. Brown (Wellington). The D.O.A. stated that he had taken charge of the hotel and found everything in good order. An expert had valued the furniture and stock at £249. The arrangements for the sale of the furniture and stock were left in the hands of the D.O.A. Messrs Abraham and Williams advertise their initiatory stock sale at their recently erected yards at Pohangina on Tuesday, February 12th. Settlers in the Pohangina County will, no doubt, much appreciate Messrs Abraham and Williams' enterprise, which must prove a »reat convenienue to settlers wishing to dispose of their stock while those desirous of purchasing will also benefit by having their requirements supplied nearer home. The entries for the first sale are large and we have every confidence sales at these yards will increase in importance and prove of mutual benefit to the settlers and auctioneers. The Manchester Rifles had a very successful parade last night there being a good muster of all ranks. Captain Kirton was in command and SergeantMajor MacMillan inspected on behalf of the Government. Lieutenant Halcombe drilled the company in the ordinary movements, and Sergeant Petherick had. charge of the recruit squad. Good work was done. At the conclusion of the parade Captain Kirton stated the secretary of the Shooting Committee, Mr E. G. Wilson, would receiye applications for the position of marker (which was rather a remunerative position) from members ! of the corps. Government parades will ; be held on the 7th and 21st insts, and as the latter is " Muster " parade every j member must be in attendance and pro- \ duce all arms and accoutrements for the inspection of Colonel Newall. Drill for recruits will be held on the 14th instant, j The parade was then dismissed. '

The re-appointment of Mr F. Pirani, M. H. R., as a member of the Wellington Land Board, is gazetted. Mr Charles Bull, of Aorangi, advertises for tenders for cleaning a creek and drain. Specifications can be seen at Mr James Campion's, Aorangi. The Feilding Fire Brigade practices for February are advertised to-day. The monthly meeting will be held in the Foresters' Hall on Monday next. The Bishop of Salisbury and the newly consecrated Bishop of Wellington will accompany the Yen. Archdeacon Towgood on his return to Marton. The first meeting of the Tariff Commission will be held on Monday next. The Hon. W. G. Steward has been appointed chairman. After taking evidence in Wellington the Commission will proceed north to Napier, Wanganui. New Plymouth and Auckland. The report is to be made by the end of April at the latest. A largely attended meeting of shareholders and milk suppliers to the Dairy Union assembled at Bunnythorpe Public Hall on Wednesday evening. The chair was taken by Mr J. Dixou, who stated that the milk suppliers were greatly exercised at the late reductions of 7£ and 10 per cent on the monthly accounts. After an explanation by Mr Roberts a discussion took place on the question of milk test. It was ultimately resolved that Messrs Stace, W. Anderson and James should visit the Palmerston factory to test some samples and to forward similar samples to the Government analyst in order to prove the accuracy ol the Babcock tester. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Roberts for his attendance.
