THE NEW PRESIDENT ARRESTED [PEB PHEBS ASSOCIATION . ' Paris, January 31. Ex-President Casirnir Perier, replying to a deputation, said he preferred to suffer calumny to giving a handle to enemies of the Republic, and he was therefore reticent as to the real reasons for his retirement. President Faure, seeking admission to the Elysee, was refused admittance by the sentry, and being unable to give the password was actually arrested. After some time an Officer of the Guard made his appearance and the head of the Republic was released from his awkward position.
