The Post states a movement is on foot amongst the Opposition members of the House to appoint a delegate to go round the country and reply to Ministerial speeches, and a fund is being raised for this purpose. Auckland, January 28. i Yesterday being the birthday of the ' Emperor of Germany the occasion was 1 duly observed in a festive manner on board the German warship Bussard in the Calliope dock. The vessel was decorated with bunting and was visited by a large number of Aucklanders. The Auckland Amateur Athletic Club have selected the following team to repre- { sent Auckland at the Championship Meeting to be held at Napier on February 22nd I and 23rd :— lOOjds and 250 yds, James ( and Francis ; quarter mile, Bull and , Francis ; long jump, T. Roberts and W, ' H Martin ; high jump, E. T. Laurie ; bicycle events, Surman and Filkmgton ; one and three wile walks. Creamer and Brady ; bslf-mile, Beere and Bull ; one , and three mile runs, Davis, Beere Farquhar and O'Connor ; 120 yds and 440 yds hurdle races, T. Roberts and W. H. Martin. Hawkba, This Day. The inquest on the man named Edward Thompson shows he had received fatal injuries by a fall from his horse. Invebcabgill, January 28, Mr J. A, McDonald, aged 24 was shot dead this evening near Lime Hills while out rabbit shooting. He was a son of Mr McDonald formerly of Milton, but now living near Oamaru. Chbistchurch, January 28 Mr W. W Tanner addressed his constituents to-night, and was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence.
