The Fielding Star, OROUA & KIWITEA COUNTIES GAZETTE. Published Daily. TUESDAY, JAN. 29, 1895. A WATER SUPPLY.

« The exceptionally dry weather we have experienced this summer ought to be a warning to the burgesses of Feilding that for a certainty the question of a water supply aud drainage scheme will have to be faced at no very distant date. From time to time the Bubject has been mooted both by private ratepayers and the Borough Council, but no practical suggestion has yet been made. The great obstacle in the way is the dread that any such scheme would necessarily carry with it a proposal to increase the rates which are already, by many property owners, deemed to be sufficiently high. The fact that a water supply would be almost entirely self supporting, is lost sight of altogether, if it is ever taken into consideration at all. It is unquestioned that the benefits derivable from an abundant supply of pure wholesome water both as regards comfort and health, cannot be ever estimated. Now, although we have for the most part been able to rely on stored rainwater, and there are a few wells within the limits of the Borough from which tolerably good water may be obtained, yet the water in the greater number is unfit for human consumption, and the raiu fall has lately been irregular, and therefore net to be relied on as a constant means of supply. Under these circumstances which must be admitted to exist by every resident in the town, a permanent and absolutely certain water supply has become a necessity. Palmers ton North has already experienced enormous benefit from the enterprise of the citizens in this connection, and the same may be said of Wanganui where we notice the Borough Council is moving in the direction of still further making provision for exceptionally dry seasons like the present one We would like to impress on the burgesses that if they want the town to keep pace with their rivals on the rail way line, they must pull together and join heart and hand in the good work. Each one is equally interested and each one should therefore do his level best to help.
