Melbourne Argus on New Zealand Finance.
«. (Por Press Association). Melboukne, This Day. The Argus, referring to the uneasiness in London regarding the alleged deficit in New Zealand, says it is not surprised at the deficit shown, as trade in New Zealand has, owing to the fall in prices, undergone a contraction for the last two years, and a flourishing revenue is compatable only with good trade. The most serious cause for complaint with regard to New Zealand finances is that some kind of pledge was given that there should be no further borrowing for a considerable time, but the public debt has continued to increase. It is very possible, it says, there is sound justification for the expenditure on public -works which has augmented the public indebtedness, but that would certainly form strong reasons for candour.
