It haa, unfortunately, been ebb tide with New Zealand commercially for some years past, but the idea is not suggested by the old sad theme, alas, too familiar with us all, but tlu- pre sent positiou of matters political. These are working toward a change m the political atmosphere, but how or when it may take shape is, of course, but a matter of speculation. The present party in power have had the flowing tide of popular favor with them, it may be said, from IS9O until the present time, and that favor has been sustained more from the fact that the Government have had a run of very good luck ; rather than that they have given proofs of good management of the country's affairs. The majority of the electors have been ready to accredit Ministers with not a little measure of the success that was supposed to attend their administration, but just as " The winds of Heaven change 'in their circuit " so turns "the popular gale," and so also turns the popular tide that ran so strong and high as to appear resistless and unturnable in its course. Much of the legislation of last session affecting employers and employed has been already submitted to the' test of experience, and proved to be more irritating than beneficial ; yet, notwithstanding that fact, of which .Ministers must be quite aware, the Hon. Mr Reeves last night, in Wellington, said, when speaking of the Labor Bills, that more of the same would be introduced next session. The Undesirable Emigrants Bill he also intends to go on with, apparently oblivious of the ridicule this proposed measure has already met with-not only iv this, but in the other colonies. At the close of the meeting Mr Beeves absolutely denied that there would be a deficit at the end of the financial year, a statement which we and every ' other well-wisher of the colony sincerely hope will be true. However, the figures which were published by a leading Wellington paper (said to be in the confidence of Ministers), and telegraphed by the Press Association, gave reason to believe that the rev ; enue for the three quarters was not up j to the Colonial Treasurer's estimate.
