Death on Board the Monowai.
(Per Press Association.) Auckland, January 21. A saloon passenger on the Monowai from Sydney to Wellington named Peake was found at 7 o'clock in his cabin tonight by the chief steward in a state of coma, and died in a few minutes. An empty bottle of chlorodyno was found in the cabin, and a full one in his pocket, apparently purchased from a local chemist. Peake came on board at Sydney apparently suffering from the effects of drink, and refused to drink on the passage. He went ashore early this morning, and returned at 9 a.m. and went to his cabin, where he had been all day till he was found this evening by the chief steward. At the inquest on Heake, the saloon passenger who died on the Monowai, a verdict was returned to the effeGt that he died from chlorodyne poisoning, but that there was no evidence to show whether the dose was taken to induce sleep or with the intention of committing suicide.
