Disgraceful Scenes at a Political Meeting.
A MODEL M.H.R. (Per Press Association.) Ohristchukch, January 21 The reports in both the morning papers state that a most disgraceful scene took place at Mr McLachlan's, M.H.R., meeting at South Rakaia on Friday night. They declare unequivocally that the member for Ashburton was under the influence of liquor to such an extent that he was unable to deliver his speech. No arrangement had been made for a chairman, and after an unseemly attack by Mr McLachlan on a resident, who said he would not have presided bad he been asked, a gentleman took the chair, but in plain terms told the member of his condition, and advised him to abandon the meeting. Mr McLachlan elected to go on, however, but after an unsuccessful attempt to commence his speech, gave in, and the audience, among whom were several ladies, left the hall. The scene terminated by the member falling off the stage. ______.«__«»«-.
